MY SKIN COLOUR

MY SKIN COLOUR

By Rebecca Masina

Why does my skin have to define me?

Why is being dark skinned considered to be the same as black skinned? not beautiful? Even so why does it bother some if one has a dark skin? Is that person not the same as other light skinned people? How important is the light skinned? How much better is the light skinned? Have you ever imagined that light skinned as a dark skinned person and see that there is no difference as they are all people? Do light skinned individuals eat or do things better than the other? Are they born with special talents?

I realized quickly what Mandela and Tambo meant to ordinary Africans. It was a place where they could come and find a sympathetic ear and a competent ally, a place where they would not be either turned away or cheated, a place where they might actually feel proud to be represented by men of their own skin color. No one is judging anyone as everyone has their own opinions and it is within their rights to have one. It is seen that most of the people prefer being friends or associates with light skinned people as they are viewed as more beautiful and easy to hang around with. I for one see that as a myth. Everyone has their own opinions about the skin of other people. Being dark skinned doesn’t make you ugly or unapproachable.

It is perceived by stereotypes that light skinned are nicer for going to parties and are good for music videos and they are easy people. Dark skinned are better in other parts especially when they are thick bodied. Light is associated with being blon

There are people whom actually prefer dark skinned people.  Do not let your skin colour to define your life for you. Do not let the opinions of other people to choose the path for your life. You are as human as much as they are too. Which colour is better or not it does not matter. Choose to be wise and be a person of right choices.
